THE MAN IN THE ARENA _ 시어도어 루스벨트 연설 / 영어 해석

배우 윤여정님과 작가 롤링처럼 역경 속에서도 자신을 실패자로 규정하지 않고 결코 포기하지 않았던 사람들, 실패를 두려워하지 않고 행동하여 자신만의 '경기장'으로 들어가 분투하는 사람들을 영어로 'highly driven people' 이라고 표현합니다. 

루스벨트의 말처럼, 큰 꿈을 꾸고 세상에 한 획을 긋고 싶다면 삶이라는 경기장에 들어가 맞서 싸우는 검투사(gladiator)가 되어야 하는 것이죠.

 

미국의 26대 대통령 시어도어 루즈벨트(Theodore Roosevelt)의 연설 'THE MAN IN THE ARENA'를 함께 읽어보겠습니다.

 

 

THE MAN IN THE ARENA

 

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

경기장 안에 있는 사람

 

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. 

중요한 사람은 이익이 되는지 아닌 지를 따져 대는 비평가가 아니다; 강한 사람이 어떻게 걸려 넘어지는지 또는 어떻게 하면 더 잘할 수 있었는지 지적하는 사람도 아니다.   

* doer of deeds : 행위자

 

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; 

실제로 경기장 안에서 싸우는 사람, 먼지와 땀 그리고 피로 망가진 얼굴을 가진 바로 그 사람이 중요하다; 용맹하게 분투하는; 실수하고 몇 번이고 되풀이해서 곤경에 처하는 사람 말이다; 왜냐하면 실수와 단점이 없이는 어떤 노력도 없기 때문이다;

 

but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; 

그러나 옳은 행위를 하기 위해 분투하며; 위대한 열정과 위대한 헌신의 가치를 알고 있는; 훌륭한 대의에 자신의 모든 에너지를 쏟아붓는 사람;

 

who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

그는 최상으로 마침내 최고 성취의 환희를 알 것이다, 그리고 설령 실패하는 최악의 경우라도 최소한 과감히 도전하다 실패했으므로, 결코 승리도 패배도 모르는 냉소하고 소심한 영혼을 지닌 자들과 함께 견줄 수 없는 그런 사람의 몫이다.
